I am very glad that I watched this on TV instead of going to the theater. I would have missed MOST of the plot and exposition simply because it all goes by so fast. By reading it I could at least keep up.
Personally, I did miss having songs with melodies that stick with me after the show. There were just s few phrases that stuck.
I did enjoy it, though, and it did get me "googling" my early American history and people. Anything that gets you interested in any topic and gives you the desire to learn (or re-learn) something is good.
Between another favorite, 1776" and "Hamilton" my computer was busy with history.

Maybe if I wasn't blind sided I might have liked it. First, the characters are blackwashed, which made things a little confusing for me trying to figure out who is who. There is no attempt at all to try to look like the actual people they are portraying.
Most musicals have scenes interluded with great musical numbers. This is one constant song that is mostly hip hop and rap. Did not appreciate the many uses of the Lord's name in vain either.
The background never changes, this is the first musical I've ever seen that used the same background throughout the entire production.
I don't understand what all the hype is, but it definitely wasn't for me.
